Longwood Mechanics
Hall The Mechanics hall has undergone many
changes recently and is more and more becoming a focal point of the
community. The new porch and front windows have significantly
improved the appearance of the place. It is amazing how many people
who live close to the hall have never actually been into the hall;
or realise that it has 3 floors including the dance studio and
meeting rooms.
Why not make 2010 the year for you to come and have
a look around the hall; after all it does belong to you and all the
residents of Longwood. Come to one of the many classes or join us
at the vibrant Coffee Mornings. Meet other residents, your local
councillors, the Longwood Village Group and the Hall Management
team. Get the latest on whats happening in and around the district.
Kids corner, air hockey, table tennis, table football to entertain
those young at heart. This all generates income to look after and
maintain the hall that you the residents own.
Work in and around the Hall continues at a steady
progress, the Community Cafe is still on target to open April 2011.
Our immediate project is to raise funds to replace the remaining
large windows in the hall at 2000 each. We would really appreciate
if anyone would be willing to sponsor one of the windows or help
with fundraising.
To join our monthly email list for all the up to
date information and events at the hall please email: derek.fairbank@ntlworld.com
Pighill Wood Longwood
Village Group Woodchip Project In 2005 Longwood Village
Group (LVG) obtained a lottery grant to fund a Woodland Conservation
and Heritage Improvement Project in Pighill Wood adjacent to Outlane
Golf Course. (Pighill Wood is sometimes locally referred to as Bunny
Wood or the Plantation).
In 2007 LVG purchased the woodland from the
previous owners, Yorkshire Water. The lottery funding allowed the
Group to purchase tools and equipment, and to erect fences around
the boundaries of the property in an attempt to prevent
inappropriate access by motorbikes, quad bikes and horses.
The lottery funding also allowed various
surveys to be undertaken such as a wildlife survey and an
archaeological survey.
Over the time of the project, to date, over 70
different individuals have contributed over 1500 hours of voluntary
work, rebuilding walls, clearing footpaths, erecting and repairing
fences, removing litter etc.
All this work contributed towards forming a
woodland management plan for the future. Although the lottery funded
part of the project is over there are still plenty of opportunities
to be involved and help with this project. For full details contact
